Passions That Teach: How a Love of Drama Inspires Learning in the Classroom
When she is not in the classroom, P6 teacher Catherine Robertson can often be found on stage, bringing musicals to life as part of a local amateur dramatics society.
Catherine’s passion for performing began in childhood through involvement in youth theatre and her love of singing, dancing and acting has continued ever since. Being part of productions alongside like-minded people and performing in beautiful theatres is something she describes as a true privilege.
Through performance, Catherine has built confidence, developed her creativity and formed friendships with people from many different backgrounds – skills she is passionate about nurturing in the pupils she teaches. Whether leading lively discussions, storytelling or encouraging pupils to perform, drama plays an important role in helping her spark creativity and self-expression in every child.
Each year, Catherine also helps to lead the Primary School show, a role she considers a real privilege. Throughout the rehearsal process, she sees first-hand how pupils develop confidence, communication, collaboration and performance skills. Watching them take pride in their achievements and experience the joy of performing to a live audience is immensely rewarding.
One of the most special aspects of teaching in an all-through school, Catherine reflects, is meeting former primary pupils who still talk enthusiastically about their experiences in school productions. This year, she is delighted to share the stage with a current S6 pupil – a former primary pupil – who has joined the same theatre company.
Catherine is keen to emphasise that school productions are about far more than showcasing the strongest singers, dancers or actors. Being part of a show offers a holistic experience for every cast member, providing opportunities to collaborate across age groups and to be part of something truly special. This year’s production of Annie will feature 40 P6 and Transitional pupils in the main cast, alongside an extended P4 and P5 ensemble, and Catherine is looking forward to seeing every pupil shine on stage.
This feature forms part of Morrison’s Academy’s Passions That Teach series, which celebrates how teachers’ interests beyond the classroom enrich learning and reflect the school’s ethos of Teachers As Learners. At Morrison’s Academy, we believe the best teachers are learners too – and when teachers continue to learn, pupils thrive.
