Celebrating Neurodiversity: The Umbrella Project Launches at Morrison’s Academy

Event Date: 02/10/2025

Event Time: 10:00 am

This term, Morrison’s Academy proudly unveiled a striking new installation at the heart of our campus – dozens of vibrant umbrellas suspended across the Lafferty Library. As part of the UK-wide Neurodiversity Umbrella Project, in partnership with the ADHD Foundation, this campaign is more than just eye-catching art. It’s a thoughtful way to recognise the diverse ways our pupils think and learn, and a powerful symbol of our commitment to inclusion.

At Morrison’s Academy, we believe that every learner’s strengths and differences should be recognised and supported and our whole-school approach is rooted in empathy, innovation and inclusivity.

“We don’t just support differences – we celebrate them,” says our Head of Pupil Support Kristiina Fetter. “Every learner brings something unique to our school community and our job is to help them shine. True inclusion means creating an environment where pupils don’t feel like they have to mask who they are to fit in. It’s about recognising that being neurodivergent isn’t a barrier to success, it’s a different pathway to it. When we empower young people to understand their own minds and give them the tools they need to thrive, they don’t just achieve academically, they grow in confidence, resilience and self-worth. That’s what education should be about.”

Morrison’s Academy’s commitment to inclusion is matched by the strength of our academic results. In 2025 we achieved exceptional A-C pass rates – and the best Higher and National 5 results across Perthshire and Tayside:

National 5: 96%

Highers: 95%

Advanced Highers: 88%

These results are outstanding but they’re only part of the story. Behind every grade is a partnership between motivated pupils, supportive families and dedicated teaching professionals. Our staff do more than deliver lessons, they equip our young people with the skills, strategies and self belief they need to succeed.

For some pupils, achieving success means overcoming various barriers to learning and this is where our Pupil Support team plays an important role. Whether providing tailored study strategies, short-term interventions or ongoing personalised support, the team works within and outside the classroom to ensure every learner can thrive. From building independent learning skills to offering targeted help with dyslexia, ADHD, autism or other learning differences, we ensure that every pupil is not only understood but empowered to succeed.

The umbrella installation is a joyful, inclusive statement – a canopy of colour that invites conversations about neurodiversity. Each umbrella represents a different way of thinking, learning and seeing the world. Together, they create a visual metaphor: just as umbrellas offer protection from the elements, a supportive environment allows neurodivergent individuals to flourish.

By participating in the Umbrella Project, Morrison’s Academy joins a growing movement across the UK to raise awareness and challenge stigma around neurodivergent profiles.

“The umbrellas are bright, bold and impossible to ignore – much like the individuality and potential of our learners,” adds Kristiina. “They remind us each day that diversity should be visible and valued.”

The Umbrella Project is one of many ways Morrison’s Academy demonstrates its commitment to an inclusive, supportive learning environment. As the installation catches the light in the Lafferty Library, it quietly reinforces a core belief at the heart of our school: difference is something to be embraced.

“We are building a school community where every learner feels seen, supported, and valued,”says Kristiina. “As when we do that, everyone benefits.” Hear more from Kristiina about the exciting project here.

Morrison’s Academy will be holding a coffee morning to officially launch the Umbrella Project on Thursday 02 October at 10am for pupils, parents and friends of the school. Please come along and view this exciting project.
